dirt on the welcome mat

Hear the little fires pop
And sizzle on pale autumn skin?
Marshmallow roasts and hay rides
Bump down sweatered arms
As scary stories begin
To wind-whisper shivers into sweat
And bring breath to a boil.
Faces glisten
Apple-bobbing wet
As scarecrow hands and feet
Recoil- then reach for the breeze
Far from patched overalls,
The thick uncomfortable layers,
That fickle fashion of fall.

grab the diving board
and wrap it around your waist,
taste the salty snacks floating

to your sun-kissed fingers
as you dangle your feet
in sparkling water

with warm waves
that tickle toes
until they hang soft and loose,

letting tension fall with the bugs
to the bottom
of the pool.

Bionic black violin bow,
Weather gavel,
Rain whip,

Chastening floodwaters,
Chasing each drop.

Heavy railroad crossing gate,
Aquatic baton,
Auto eyelash,

Strong and simple
Works until the job’s done.

Metal appendage of a grasshopper,
Water warrior,
Storm dial.

Hardened extension of nature,
Indispensable accessory.

Grip your comic strip parachute

And float with me.

Let’s giggle down to home,

Naming cities after clouds,

Reflecting the sun in our smiles

Until the forecast

Makes the weathermen dance.
