dirt on the welcome mat

Tag Archives: water

you can have too much
water,
showers
swallows
sheer expression.
your glass,
hold or hide it,
gathers
this earth glue
between
your hands.
think about it
sometimes
just before
drip-dropping
down to sleep.
then swim in
the overflow,
don’t try to
keep the deep.

There’s a pattern in the mold beneath the sunset paint,
The cracks above fold like rivers into a dark sea
Rank with rotting fishy skins.
This water boils the dinner plates
Clean again
After a meal of swamp sauce and
Reeds steamed with the heavy green air
For our dinner on the marsh banks,
Not for the fair or faint of heart.

There’s a bridge between us

But it’s stone and cold

And too close to rushing water.

You just got off work and

My rain boots have holes

And we’re forever sons and daughters

Of tomorrow and yesterday.

So simply send me paper airplanes

Or throw boomerangs

As far as you can.

My memory of you

Floats in the river in the woods

Behind my house.

It sings louder than the water

Washing it smooth

And warms the leaves’ arthritic hands,

It heals me too.

Tossing

Word water balloons

At an art gallery,

You force passions

To mix and wrestle

Their liquid wills.

Your bullets burst,

Stain, and slide down

Glorified fruit,

Landscapes, and skin.

They are

Your tears

As you fend

For yourself.

Chlorine and sunscreen
And mean
Swimming instructor.
Do the butterfly stroke
Or float or
Like a nervous blowfish,
Just bobble
Blue-faced,
Tread water until
You taste towels
And a t-shirt
On the ride home.
Can’t swim in the shallow,
Well,
Give it a go
In the can’t touch-
Learn or
Drown deep, down
You go
Praying for snow
Or sickness
Until school starts again.

Bionic black violin bow,
Weather gavel,
Rain whip,

Chastening floodwaters,
Chasing each drop.

Heavy railroad crossing gate,
Aquatic baton,
Auto eyelash,

Strong and simple
Works until the job’s done.

Metal appendage of a grasshopper,
Water warrior,
Storm dial.

Hardened extension of nature,
Indispensable accessory.
