dirt on the welcome mat

The things we burn to keep warm
Are prettiest
Flame-tipped,

Treasures half-consumed
By the stuff of another world.

The second of offering,
Unblemished
By dark ash
and smoke,

Is our finest-
We feed
The unfinished
To purity and desire.

Wake me up

With a solo on pink rubber band strings,

Sing softly a Jamaican hymn,

Rub your cool gold rings

Across my forehead

And splash stained glass

Colors across my toes.

Gently dip me in life,

Dye me beautiful.

grab the diving board
and wrap it around your waist,
taste the salty snacks floating

to your sun-kissed fingers
as you dangle your feet
in sparkling water

with warm waves
that tickle toes
until they hang soft and loose,

letting tension fall with the bugs
to the bottom
of the pool.

Buttons spin

On the ceiling-

You’re feeling

A plastic dizziness,

Bleached threads

Dangle their knotted strands

Into each of your ears,

Inching slowly through

The grooves of the brain

And expanding

As your thoughts sweat,

Sending sweater fuzz

Bouncing colorful

Behind bright eyes

Until lids droop

Warm and heavy.

summertime smiles,

like warm rain,

sometimes

make you feel like

the sun

itself
