dirt on the welcome mat

Your sounds

Are mentholated music,

Giggle-shouts and whisper-songs

Swirl into the wall’s pores,

Soothing and stretching

Exiled toys and the timeout corner

Into a colorful oblivion.

We ride the stained magic carpet to

Your stereo smile

And like dancing bears,

Forget our manners

And the time

But always remember to sing

Ourselves to sleep

To the off-beat rhythm of fun.

I give you a strong push from behind

When you fly toward my face

On your mood swing.

Kicking feet, tangled hair,

The metal chains squeak

As you soar higher,

But the rubber seat jerks

At the peak, mid-giggle.

Instantly your shrieks

Propel it backwards,

A playground twist of fate

You never outgrew.

Sticks of candy

And smiley faced stickers,

Stones as pets, our imaginary friends.

Will we ever

Break from our childhood?

My very

Bones remember the playground,

But you have had a marrow transplant, your

Words don’t loop back,

Will you

Never return to your bug collection- what

Hurt stops you from remembering with

Me?
