dirt on the welcome mat

sticky night air
dream walks
drizzle doughnut glaze
over child thoughts
until the moon’s
hard honeycomb glow
hits glass jar sides
like fireflies
and escape seems
to drip soft from
the sweetest star

You and I pirouette
Under floodlights and
Bow with fresh
Foliage swirling around our
Pointed toes.

We look up
Just as the curtain falls
Black
With gleams
From spotlights overhead.

Sitting cold like the
Wet grass,
We smile exhaustion
Until the stage shakes
An unyielding encore.

Riding the highway rumble strip

Slowly to feel each rise and drop.

Both windows down,

Warm night air hugs the sound of

Tires straddling the black

Perforated edge of goodbyes,

Stop and go breeze whistles

Between each finger

That dares to test life

Away from the steering wheel.

Radio static turns thoughts

Into black and white confetti,

Into missing puzzle pieces

And the quiet notes of the

Chorus,

         Bridge,

                   Chorus.

I’ll never forget how faithfully

You tucked me in with burlap,

Wrapped ice packs around my toes,

And placed a heavy green glass

Of bubbly mud by my bedside.

You read aloud half a manual

On gears and car parts,

Threatened me with a test,

Then turned on the light

And said,

”Sleep might hit you in the head

With a sledgehammer,

Share the bedbugs

With the monsters in your closet.”

Driving in the dark,

Dreaming for the houses

With their nightlights on the outside,

Window blinds tugged

Like  sleep masks firmly in place,

And dewy blankets pushed back

Just a little by

Each carport’s concrete fingers.

The car radio sings a loud lullaby

And I think

Being awake must mean

Living more than one life.

You are the moon,

The big, bright moon.

No one can reach you,

They are afraid of the distance in between.

Just keep reflecting the light

Don’t fight the sounds

That taunt,

Let the darkness absorb each one.

You can laugh as they echo

Off constellations,

You only deserve celebrations

As you orbit us all.

Good night,

Sleep tight,

Have dreams about the brightest light

That’s ever reached

Your pretty heart

Wake with a smile because you might

Just break through

To someone’s thoughts,

Like stars shooting into sight.
