dirt on the welcome mat

Tag Archives: forgotten

sunshine warm as trickling blood
and colors wrapped in rainy mist
whisper must into dark layers
of dried promise and future bliss

~~~
collected to rot,
the tulip bulbs,
sad orbs misshapen
like old, dulled eyes
dwelling dusty and dark
in the basement, their ark,
their coffin sealed tight
with concrete carelessness
the short word,
third wheel,
drop that rolled
forgotten
off the duck’s back
and traced its wet way
to sales’ tax and fridge notes,
suggestion box slips
and last minute trips
to small towns
We drew the sky in sidewalk chalk
Then walked barefoot
Until the sun rubbed into our toes,
Soft and cool.
You said
Share your secrets on the concrete
And the rain will wash
Each pastel curve
Into the cracks.
Lint clumps and sharp, dry pasta pieces
Kicked beneath the rug
Brush across each taste bud,
Stick to the sides
Of my throat,
Or float down
With each sweep of your
Dusty blue
Broom bristle stares.
You pricked my
Kitchen floor cares,
And now I’m choking on
Forgotten appetites.
