dirt on the welcome mat

Sort and separate
The pine needles
Pricking the parts
Of you
That still feel.

Snap the spindly
Excuses before
You’re infected
By their hardening
Poison.

Sure, you stand tall
In your stubborn resolve,
But several wobbly
Rings in your solid core
Will be all that’s left

When someone cuts
You deep enough.

My heart,

Entombed in black nail polish

Ten coats thick,

Painfully pumps

Dark soda liquid

That fizzes violently

Then settles heavy

In my veins.

My swollen throat,

Pounded with bright red Pop rocks,

Tightens around one long, black arrow

Whose sharp tip

Jabs each vital organ

While my lungs,

Like weathered bagpipes,

Torture each breath.
