dirt on the welcome mat

interrogate
and open doors
but when you’ve finished
slide them softly
back in their frames

like you would
a bed of matches
resting, waiting
for darkness in
their box with words

a boundary
like a cliff
with only hovering birds
and the crumbling rock edge
to break strength
and silence.

All the paintings in his house

Were of the walls themselves.

Replicating boundaries,

Untraveled seas,

And memories

With each framed

Canvas layer,

His own brush painted

Dust and cracks

Between the shelves.

He held perfection,

Crushed, then glued

It back together,

And hoped that she

Was doing the same.
