dirt on the welcome mat

I am from books and orange oil.
I am from the yellow flowers that peek up between the gravel in the driveway.
I am from the pine tree, the pear tree whose fruit is shared with the birds.
I am from Fourth of July fireworks and leanness, from Ed and Jack and Myers.
I am from the kind hearts and determined arguers.
From “Don’t interrupt!” and “Speak when you’re spoken to!”
I am from Jesus loves the little children and Sunday School coloring sheets.
I’m from Burlington, red velvet cake and casseroles.
From the former students of my grandmother who find her at restaurants and the time my grandmother hit my dad with her pocketbook at the bank.
I am from the photo albums hidden under the couch, the snapshots in drawers, and the pictures framed in the hallway.
